Some legends are passed down through generations, their origins unknown. Yet once heard, they remain forever imprinted in the mind. Hanako-san is one such tale. A simple name, yet enough to send shivers down the spines of Japanese children whenever they step into a lonely gakkou no toire (school restroom).

The Ghost in the Shadows
It is said that if you knock on the third stall of the restroom on the top floor and call out, “Hanako-san, are you there?”, a faint voice will reply. Sometimes, the door creaks open, revealing a young girl in an old school uniform, her long hair covering half her face, with hollow eyes staring back.
No one truly knows who Hanako-san was. Some say she hid in the restroom when the bombs fell but never made it out. Others claim she took her own life due to the pressures of school. While the origins vary, one thing remains the same—the lingering sense of unease in empty school corridors.
A story once circulated about a student who shared his experience on a forum. He and his friends had tried calling Hanako-san, and suddenly, the stall door creaked open. There was no one inside. But when he glanced at the mirror, a pair of unfamiliar eyes were staring back at him.
Fear Without a Form
Japanese schools at night are eerily silent. The flickering fluorescent lights, the slow drip of water from the sink, and the seemingly endless hallways. The gakkou no toire is the most isolated place—no one around, just you and the silence.
Hanako-san is not the only ghost haunting Japanese schools. In other regions, there is Aka Manto (the Red Cloak), a spirit that asks if you want red paper or blue paper. Choose red, and you will be torn to pieces. Choose blue, and the blood in your body will drain away.
These stories are enough to make even the bravest students hesitate before stepping into an empty restroom.
Hanako-san: A Ghost or a Warning?
As terrifying as it is, the tale of Hanako-san serves as a reminder—not to stay too late at school alone, to be cautious in deserted places, and to avoid playing with the supernatural. Whether real or not, Hanako-san remains an unforgettable part of childhood memories for generations of Japanese students.
